Analytical engagements vary significantly in complexity and governance requirements. An initial message outlining the decision context, available data, timing considerations, and institutional constraints will allow for a focused and efficient discussion. If you’re considering a collaboration, a short note outlining the context is usually enough to begin. The following points help clarify scope and feasibility:

  1. Objective: The specific analytical question you need answered, and the decision or output it informs.
  2. Data available: What data you have access to, its format, volume, and any governance constraints on its use.
  3. Deadline: Any fixed deadlines (regulatory, publication, board) and whether the timeline has flexibility.
  4. Constraints: Software environment, output format requirements, confidentiality restrictions, or internal standards that must be met.
  5. Decision-maker involved: Who will use the output, and at what level of technical fluency.
